In this week's column, councillor Paul Bettison OBE, the leader of Bracknell Forest Council, wishes families a happy half-term break, announcing offers at The Lexicon, including the The Very Hungry Caterpillar trail, and also looks forward to the Half Marathon taking place at the end of Spring. Cllr Bettison writes:

I hope that everyone is having a happy half-term break. There are many activities and offers for school-aged children happening in the borough this week. Keep an eye on the Discover Bracknell Forest social media channels for the latest information.

If you are popping to The Lexicon, children will be able to take part in The Very Hungry Caterpillar trail in the town centre. And remember, as part of this event there are also great kids’ meal deals at selected cafés and restaurants. Children can eat free at Fuego (Fenwick), Las Iguanas, Marks & Spencer café, Tangs, The Real Greek, Wagamama and Waitrose café. If you want to find out more about how to take up this offer, visit The Lexicon website.

Even once half-term has finished, there is still a lot to look forward to in Bracknell Forest. On Sunday, May 14 there will be over 1,000 runners braving The Lexicon Bracknell Half Marathon. This 13.1 mile course offers a challenging but rewarding run through some of the borough's most beautiful sites, while being cheered on by our supportive residents!

If you are looking for a challenge, you still have over three months of training time to get ready. There are plenty of places still available. If you are interested, apply through the Everyone Active booking portal.

It is now just over a month before applications close for the Household Support Fund. This funding has been provided by the Department of Work and Pensions and is dedicated to supporting low income households, particularly in relation to food costs and essential bills.

The council has been distributing this funding in several ways since October 2022, including through the current Local Welfare Scheme. This application-based support is particularly for those who do not automatically qualify for other cost of living support schemes. It offers support for basic living costs and the cost of essential items to help you remain in your home.

The Local Welfare Scheme can offer support with:

• food costs

• energy costs

• basic essentials

• one-off grants in emergencies

• cost of essential items that are unexpected or difficult to budget for

Please, if you are struggling financially, check your eligibility on the council’s Local Welfare Scheme webpage and apply by 24 March for local financial support.

I wish you all a fun and happy half-term week, whatever you are up to.
