JAAP Stam insists it is still a case of one game at a time after Reading FC extended their unbeaten run to eight matches with a 1-0 win against Huddersfield Town.

Royals laboured to victory against 10-man Terriers at Madejski Stadium after Roy Beerens hit the only goal in the first half.

Reading's fourth win in five league matches also sent Stam' men up to fourth in the Championship table, while knocking Huddersfield off top spot.

And Stam, speaking ahead of tomorrow night's short trip to Brentford (7.45pm ko), declared: "We're not thinking about any unbeaten run, we're looking from game to game - and it's not going to be easy.

“We have a difficult game at Brentford for example on Tuesday.

“The players have been working very hard, playing two games this week with 10 men - so it's not easy to keep on playing how you want to in every single game.

“We are not working from Saturday to Saturday - it's Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday for weeks now.

"It would be nice to have a week between two games, to work on things with the squad.

“But it's also always nice to play games, everybody is very eager to play.

"The subs - they're not happy when they're on the bench. And that's what you want to create in a squad.”

Stam will be looking to maintain his side's unbeaten run this week which also includes a home fixture against Derby County at Madejski Stadium this Friday (3pm ko).

"We're still getting results, which is good. But there's a long way to go,” he said.

“Everything is going okay, but in this division you know it can change in a second, playing against good sides every game.

“During the course of the season, we will have difficult spells as well. When that happens, you need to know how to get back up again and win your games again.

“That will be a learning curve for us as well because we have a lot of new players, many who haven't been playing in this league before now.

“It's new for everybody. But up until now we've kept it up and it's going well."

The tables were turned on the Royals in the win against 10-man Huddersfield on Saturday.

Stam's side had played the majority of their previous two matches with 10 men themselves after Garath McCleary was sent off in the win at Barnsley and Tyler Blackett in the EFL Cup victory at Brighton.

But after Huddersfield's Rajiv van la Parra was dismissed for two bookings in four first-half minutes – the second for dissent – Royals struggled to make their numerical advantage count.

The home side broke the deadlock four minutes before the break with a deflected shot from Dutchman Beerens, his first league goal

John Swift also hit the post from 30 yards and substitute Stephen Quinn was denied by Danny Ward in the second half.

But David Wagner's tenacious Terriers became increasingly dangerous as the game went on with Nahki Wells, Tommy Smith and Michael Hefele all going close to grabbing an equaliser in the closing stages.

"It was a difficult one to be fair," admitted Stam. “You hope, against 10 men, the second half is going to be a bit easier than it was, that you're going to be able to control the game with a lot of possession - and from there create chances and score goals.

"A couple of times we went close to scoring a second, but our opponent did very well.

“We spoke about what to expect against 10 men at half time - we knew it was going to be very hard to break them down.

"Huddersfield have a lot of quality and we didn't play our game in the second half.

“We started playing long balls as well, and it became a battle. At the end we were just hoping the ball didn't drop for them, and thankfully it didn't.”

He added: “This game was tight, but we won it. I'm very happy with the three points but there are a lot of points we can improve on.

"We needed to have better quality on the ball, we needed more movement, more runs in behind to create space for others, we needed to play at a higher pace.

"We gave them too much time to get the ball to their full backs and for them to put crosses in and create chances of their own.

“We can do a lot better but, as I say, we were up against a very good team.”

Reading have sold all 1,660 tickets in the away end for the trip to Brentford's Griffin Park.
