WOKINGHAM Arts Society heard from British art historian in “extremely interesting” lecture.
Author and art historian Douglas Skeggs took the Arts Society Wokingham on a whistle-stop tour of 19th century Venice during the group’s May lecture.
The group heard about bankruptcy, trading and Napoleonic Wars in Venice in the 19th century.
Douglas also introduced the audience to the work of some lesser-known painters such as Bonington and Clarkson Stanfield.
A member of the audience said Douglas is “an incredible lecturer, so much knowledge delivered in quick fire to keep us on our toes. Extremely interesting with the right degree of sauciness and humour. The time just whizzed by. Another real hit by The Arts Society Wokingham”.
The Arts Society learned about French Impressionists, including Renoir and Monet, who were inspired by Venice's "colour and beauty to produce many fine paintings".
The Arts Society Wokingham ‘s next lecture is on Monday, June 19 at 7.30pm at King’s Academy, Binfield, when Tyler Butterworth will talk about a career in the theatre.
