Recently, there has been a call for all of us to recycle our batteries. Following a number of fires in bin lorries, residents are being urged to recycle their batteries correctly instead of putting them in their general waste or recycling bins.

In 2022 alone, our crews have had to deal with three fires. It only takes one small spark to start a fire and the combination of dried waste and the crushing movement inside the collection vehicle means, one small spark can very quickly turn into a life-threatening situation.

By recycling batteries correctly, residents can prevent these dangerous incidents from occurring. Plus, if they are processed in the right way, they can be used to make new batteries or other metal products.

Recycling boxes can be found in most supermarkets and local shops, as well as the recycling centre at Longshot Lane. Residents can find their nearest battery recycling point using the online finder tool: www.recycleyourelectricals.org.uk.

This week, the council welcomed a new chief executive, with Susan Halliwell taking up the role.

Mrs Halliwell, an experienced senior local government officer, was appointed to the role in June after a thorough recruitment process. She takes over the most senior staff role at the council, following Timothy Wheadon’s retirement at the end of September.

Mrs Halliwell joins from West Berkshire Council, where she was director of place and had covered the interim Chief Executive position for several months. She has also held senior positions at Oxfordshire County Council, including director of place, strategic infrastructure and planning resources manager, environment and climate change manager and transformation manager.

Bracknell Forest is no exception to the challenges and changes facing local government currently, and her experience and professionalism will help us navigate the challenges we may face, as well as maximise the opportunities we are presented with.

Bracknell Forest has a strong track record of steady leadership and is recognised for being forward thinking amongst peers, and I’m sure under Susan Halliwell’s leadership that proactivity will continue and grow.
