Last Wednesday saw the fifth national Windrush Day and 74 years since more than 500 Commonwealth citizens from the Caribbean, upon the request of the British Government, arrived at Tilbury Docks, Essex, to help rebuild Britain after World War II.

Since the SS Empire Windrush docked on 22 June 1948, those who arrived on the ship and their descendants have made, and continue to make, an enormous contribution to the country. Not just in the vital work of rebuilding the country and public services, but in enriching our shared social, economic, cultural and religious life. You can read more about Windrush Day on our website.

As June comes to an end, so too does Pride month, the annual celebration of LGBTQI+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, and intersex) communities all around the world. Bracknell Forest Council is proud to recognise and celebrate the LGBTQI+ community, and we hope you have been able to join us in raising awareness of this important month. By doing so, we will continue to improve the attitudes of society and encourage inclusiveness.

July marks the start of Disability Pride Month, an international, annual event which celebrates disabled people and the diversity of our community. The awareness month works to shine a light on physical, learning and hidden disabilities, as well as mental health conditions. It enables people to have open conversations about disability through sharing experiences, raising awareness of the barriers and challenges the community faces, as well as celebrating diversity. We hope you can join us in celebrating Disability Pride Month.

We are proud to embrace all members of our community and awareness events such as these, celebrate the wonderfully diverse society that we live in.
